“Warming Up for Winter”
As we transition from Autumn to winter, our system needs more warmth and movement, and a cleanse of the kapha dosha which creates sluggishness and heaviness in the system that can also lead to depression and fatigue. We also need to be mindful of creating stability and calm to balance vata dosha which is still active in our system.
In winter, the sky is often cloudy and grey, the weather is cold, damp, and heavy, and life moves more slowly. Welcome to the season of kapha. When balanced, kapha supplies strength, vigour, and stability to both body and mind. This subtle energy is responsible for lubricating the joints, moisturizing the skin, and maintaining immunity. But in excess, it can lead to sluggishness, mucus-related illnesses, excess weight, and negative emotions such as attachment, envy, and greed.
In general, we should follow a kapha-pacifying regimen in the winter. But dry, cold, windy weather can provoke vata, too, and can lead to arthritis, indigestion, and other problems.
Avoid cold drafts, wear warm clothes, and don’t forget to wear a hat if you have thin hair!. (Grandma was right: more than half of the body’s heat is lost through the head.) Also, cover your ears and neck to keep vata and kapha in check.
Cure a Cold.
Ayurvedically speaking, colds are a kapha-vata disorder. The body builds up an excess of cool and moist kapha qualities, resulting in congestion and a runny nose, and at the same time it may suffer from excess vata, which reduces agni, leading to chills, loss of appetite, and poor digestion. As well as drinking more warm drinks (especially fresh grated ginger and lemon in hot water with a little honey) we can build Agni, the fire element with our practice which improves immunity and heats the system from within.
On this course we will practice warming, energising and uplifting practices including asana, pranayama and mantra to cleanse the kapha dosha-and continue to keep vata dosha in check! These classes will be dynamic but also deeply nurturing. We will:
- Learn warming and energising pranayama and mantra to build agni and remove mucous from the respiratory system
- Practice stronger twists, side bends and back bends to cleanse and awaken the digestive system
- Practice Sun Salutes to warm and energise the whole system
- Practice more movement based and dynamic postures including inversions and balances
- Learn techniques to enliven the nervous system and promote optimism, enthusiasm and courage
- Continue to calm vata dosha with calming and grounding practices.
